San Pedro Sacatepéquez is a municipality in the San Marcos department of Guatemala with territory of 148 km2 at 2033 m altitude. The population is 63 688.

The town is connected with the town of San Marcos. San Pedro was named after the Saint Peter and a rooster is the official mascot. People born in the City are known as Shecanos because of a local pastry "sheca" famous throughout Guatemala. The City is located on route to Quetzaltenango in a valley called La Ermita y la Esmeralda. Rivalry with the capital city of San Marcos has existed from its beginnings although mostly in sports with some events turning to violence. San Pedro thought to be the real Capital of the department because for many years the majority of businesses were located there as supposed to San Marcos however, Universities, private schools and a military school are within San Marcos. The area as a whole is also known for its sweaters and warm clothing. The Mayan population wears some of the most colorful typical garments in the Country usually in bright yellows, greens and blues. They also speak their own language and Spanish is their second.

Sports

Deportivo San Pedro football club have been playing in the second tier of Guatemalan football since 1996.[1]

They play their home games in the Estadio Municipal San Pedro Sacatepequez.[2]
